Opening Reception: Fiona Hillinan UNSOLD
open event, rsvp

Throughout her residency, Hallinan will re-interpret an ongoing installation piece currently on exhibition at the Kerlin Gallery in Dublin for the context of Wash- ington DC and the space at Fathom Creative. The piece, entitled UNSOLD, entails collecting unsold organic items from local retailers and re-appropriating these from waste objects to a living installation representing the fluctuating nature of value and obsolescence. Through this process of ongoing negotiation with local
stores Hallinan intends to initiate an inquisitive interaction with the local area, delving into its histories of value and exchange, uncovering the stories of what might have been bought or sold in these places before. UNSOLD will appear as a fluctuating value system in the window of Fathom facing the street, a storefront for unwanted items. The exhibition is an organic creation that will incorporate an ?open studio? component. The artist invites visitors to view her process, aswell as interact and influence the piece itself. her intention will very much deal with the idea of residency: being present in the gallery for certain times every day for people to visit.

RSVP information coming soon.

Artist Residency: Fiona Hallinan: UNSOLD
open gallery

Fiona Hallinan's practice is concerned with society, value, obsolescence and technology. Her practice explores hidden narratives and non-histories of physical places. Her poetic interventions incorporate the initiation of new societal relations, story-telling, writing, archiving, choreography and event organization. Exploring new media applications of the traditional Irish story gatherer or seanchai, Fiona's work activates relations between studio process, memory, stories and material traces and absences.

"We are thrilled to work with Fathom Gallery for Fiona?s first solo exhibition in Washington, DC," says Solas Nua Artistic Director Linda Murray.

Gallery is open from 9-5 daily - however it is recommended to make an appointment by contacting faith@solasnua.org.

Culture

Einstein so famously defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. On the other hand, studies have established that it takes 10,000 hours to achieve mastery of anything. Innovation can be perceived as the harnessing of both perspectives where the process of change and experimentation is followed by a long period of disciplined execution and good old-fashioned sweat. As we strive towards self-improvement of the mind, body and soul in our daily lives, how is this cycle connected to the betterment of the world around us?

Culture

Sometimes it seems as though the universe conspires to bring together an infinite number of possible conditions into a single moment of impact. The world is full of unlikely but fruitful pairings that have endured the test of time: hydrogen and oxygen, peanut butter and jelly, Sonny and Cher. But what if the chain of crucial components just fell apart and it never happened? Parallel universes, forks in the road, decisions regretted, random sudden encounters ? if we woke up just 10 minutes earlier THAT day, would life have turned out completely different?

Topic: Practical Unit Testing with Brandon Savage (@brandonsavage)

Unit testing is an elusive subject: developers tend to agree on its importance but move right along without actually doing it. Many times their reasons are both valid and resolvable. This talk seeks to answer three basic questions:

  • What is required for me to write effective unit tests?
  • How can I sell my team on writing unit tests, even for legacy code?
  • What strategies work for implementing unit testing in my organization?
This 90-minute talk will cover these areas and more. From the School of Hard Knocks will come useful information for practical unit testing in any development shop.

Personal Branding and Lessons from Journalism

Local WordPress enthusiasts Greg Linch (@greglinch) and Ben Balter (@BenBalter) will be sharing best practices and how you can take the next step with WordPress as a platform.

Pulling from their wide-ranging experiences in journalism, publishing, government, and development, they'll be discussing how you can use WordPress to craft your personal brand, and what lessons that can be learned from how journalists use WordPress.

We've invited the DC Hacks/Hackers group, a meetup for journalists and developers, to join us this month.

Also, WordPress 3.1 was released last week. If you need help updating, a few of us will be at Fathom early that evening (starting at 6:15 pm). Bring your WordPress and FTP login information (and your laptop, if you'd like) and we'll help!

Culture
It seems like only yesterday that one could ask ?What?s the difference between an investment banker and a pizza?,?* and every other article in popular press was an account of rising happiness levels as people were readjusting their lives to the appreciation of simple pleasures like staying in with friends and raising honey bees on their roof. We claimed as a society that this new perspective was permanent. Today, companies are posting record earnings and big corporate bonuses are back with a vengeance. What does this mean for our newfound collective sense of moderation?

This evening is about getting different perspectives on the idea of moderation, simplicity, and the enjoyment of small pleasures.

This evening is an exploration of fear, so looking for adverturers and experience seekers! From hypochondria to OCD to phobias for anything under and including the sun, fear is something that manifests from within. The whole genre of horror in film and literature revolves around the power of suspense and apprehension to plant seeds of anxiety in the deep recesses of the brain, and alarmist sensationalism is likewise designed to manipulate this dreaded anticipation of the unknown.
